Until 2009 the Slovak Registry of Placental Hematopoietic Cells and the Biobank, Eurocord-Slovakia (www.eurocord.sk) provided Czech clients with its professional services. It was founded in 1997 by an experienced working team, composed of experts from the specialized field. Many of them worked in foreign laboratories engaged in research in the field of immunogenetics. In its early days, with the support of sponsors and promotional partners, and in cooperation with the Virological Institute of SAV, as a non-profit organization Eurocord Slovakia focused on receiving grants from projects of the Dutch Transplantation Foundation of Central Europe within the scope of RETRANSPLANT project supported from the European Union grants. Through obtained grants, Eurocord-Slovakia began to coordinate and upgrade the database of bone marrow in many central European countries.
In the beginning, the major goal of Eurocord-Slovakia was to build a public umbilical cord blood registry. The attention was focused on the search for compatible unrelated donors of bone marrow and umbilical cord blood for Slovak patients in the international database of bone marrow and umbilical cord blood donors BMDW (Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide - www.bmdw.org). A suitable graft match from an unrelated donor was a successful accomplishment for the first bone marrow transplantation in Slovakia, which was performed in 1999 at the Department of Hematology and Transfusion in the Faculty Hospital in Bratislava.
In that year, (1999) Eurocord-Slovakia provided the international network of registries BMDW with the first units of umbilical cord blood, prepared in their own laboratory. To this date, the registry has received nearly 1,000 units of umbilical cord blood. Based on laboratory tests from the amount of received units, 600 of these cord blood units were suitable for freezing, of which 216 were HLA standardized and included in the international network of registries BMDW. The remaining amount of the umbilical cord blood units that failed to meet the required parameters have been used for research purposes.
Currently, the Registry provides free transplant preparation for sibling transplantation. Preparation of the transplant is realized based on the requirements of transplant and cancer centers in Slovakia. It has already been done more than 20 donations for sibling transplantation.
A very important area of cooperation is the liaison with the Virological Institute, Academy of Sciences, Charles University and other research institutions for stem cells research. The use of stem cells in cardiology, neurology, or in other medical disciplines, as well as in the field of regenerative medicine is the subject of intense research.
Since 2001, Eurocord-Slovakia provides procurement, processing, freezing and storing of umbilical cord blood for the child’s own need in the Bratislava region. Eurocord-Slovakia also holds a certificate of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice - GMP) granted by the State Institute for Drug Control of the Slovak Republic. The certificate declares that the production, storage and quality control is in accordance with applicable legislation of the Slovak Republic.

The NetCord organization brings together umbilical cord blood registries in the U.S., Europe, Israel, Japan and Australia. To this day, NetCord has provided one thousand cord blood transplants for patients from all over the world. In cooperation with the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy - FACT) NetCord set the specific quality standards for the collection, cryopreservation, storage and use of umbilical cord blood for transplantation.
In February 2010, Eurocord-Slovakia provided its first donor transplant among tens of other transplants distributed around the world (mainly the USA) including the Czech Republic! In the transplant center in Motol Hospital, Prague on February 10th, 2010 a several-months old little girl with serious damage to her immune system (SCID) was transplanted with the umbilical cord blood from a donor. Did you know that the same technology is used to process your transplant?
Membership of Eurocord-Slovakia in BMDW
Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide (BMDW - www.bmdw.org) – an international network of bone marrow and umbilical cord blood donors started operating in 1988 and a year later it had created the first database, which contained a list of donors from 8 registers with a total of 180,000 bone marrow volunteering donors. The first units of umbilical cord blood entered the registry of BMDW as late as 1994.
This unique database is the largest international database of its kind that provides the global exchange of hematopoietic stem cell transplants. Its activities are coordinated through Europdonor Foundation. The aim is to collect information about HLA characteristics and other information about the unrelated bone marrow and umbilical cord blood donors, so that such information is available for transplant centers around the world. Data from 63 registries from 44 countries and 43 cord blood banks from 26 countries are currently available. Eurocord-Slovakia has HLA standardized and registered several hundred units of umbilical cord blood.
